Awnings and Canopies Demystified

Awnings and Canopies Demystified
As in many industries, the awning industry loves to throw around terms that are ‘everyday’ to us. So we’d like to take a moment to de-mystify some commonly used terms and clear up some obvious question you might have upon first coming in contact with us.
Do I want to purchase an awning, a canopy …
what’s the difference?!

These terms are used relatively interchangeably. To the naked eye, the difference is subtle because it has a lot to do with support. Awnings and canopies are both defined as lightweight frames with an attached covering. The only difference is that a canopy’s frame has 1-2 legs and an awning does not. Awnings will typically shade doors or windows and a canopy will provide shading for decks and patios. So when deciding which is the right purchase for you, there’s no need to worry about semantics. Awnings and canopies are basically the same thing – just with or without legs! Don’t get bogged down in terms. Much like your favorite coffee-shop treat…whether you order a café mocha or a mocha, your cup will still get filled with frothy, chocolaty goodness.

Retractable vs. Stationary

In recent years, retractable awnings have made a huge splash in the industry. And with good reason! A retractable awning provides shade when you want it and sunshine when you don’t. With all of this versatility available in a retractable, why might I still want to consider it’s stationary counterpart? Retractable awnings are not designed to be used in stormy weather. So if you love to sit on your patio in the Springtime with a good book and hear the tip-tap of April showers, a stationary awning might be more your style.

What happened to the tents?

With a name like KC Tent & Awning, one might expect to find information regarding tents on our website! When we were established in 1901, times were different and tents were a large part of our seedling business. As the world has changed, so have we. And though we’ve transitioned out of the tent business, we chose to retain the name. Because having an established company that has been community-centered and customer-service oriented for more than 100 years lets our customers know that we don’t just sell awnings and canopies…we’re industry experts.
