Shade. The original sunburn preventative.

Some of my favorite childhood memories involve sitting out by the pool under our huge oak tree, feeling the warm wind shuffle across my cheeks, listening to the weekly top 40 on the radio. Or on the front porch of our old farmhouse in rocking chairs listening to Grandpa play ‘Achy, Breaky Heart’ on the guitar. And on the dock at the lake with a cooler full of snacks dolled out to whomever asked the sweetest. These activities all included one important factor and it wasn’t sunscreen or skin cancer. It was shade! Shade is the original, all natural, mother-nature approved sunburn preventative.

But in the hustle and bustle of modern life, front porches and trees have been replaced with SPF 15 and 30. And this is important for on-the-go skin protection. But when it’s finally time to kick back and relax over a nice weekend at home, I don’t want to worry about slathering on a layer of sunscreen before a grill out with family and friends.

This is where my retractable awning comes to the rescue. With the press of a button, I can have sun or shade, depending on what activities are going on around me. So if I want to fill up a kiddie pool for little ones to splash around without worrying about burnt cheeks, I extend my awning and they have a nice cover of shade. Or if I’m craving a little vitamin D and some color for the winter-white dullness my skin has been reduced to, I retract my handy-dandy awning and, Voila – sunshine!
