4 Easy Steps To Spring Clean Your Exterior

4 Easy Steps To Spring Clean Your Exterior

It’s Spring Cleaning Time!! After the longest winter in KC history, we’re finally seeing evidence of Spring.  Which means, it’s time to clear away all the salt and grime.

Our KC Tent & Awning building was no exception.  Our façade needed some love after record-breaking snows and flood-inducing rains.  As recounted in the tale of the 3 little pigs, brick is the most durable building material.  It stands up to weather and wear and tear.  Our facility is located in the historic Crossroads District where most of the buildings are brick.

If your home or storefront is also Big, Bad Wolf proof and you’re considering doing some Spring Cleaning, here is the process we followed, step-by-step.

Step 1:

Pressure washing brick:

  • Always use gentle pressure to avoid damaging the brick.
  • Wet surface. Move bottom to top to prevent water from running down in uneven streams.
  • Apply a detergent designed for brick. Scrub stains with a soft-bristled brush.
  • Move top to bottom to be sure to get a thorough rinse.

Step 2:

Tuck Pointing:

In order to make the brick look like new, we tuck pointed areas of the façade that were looking worn.  If you don’t know what tuck pointing is, here’s a great explanation from the one and only Bob Vila, King of the DIYers.

Used to cosmetically enhance the appearance of masonry, tuckpointing involves removing a portion of the deteriorated mortar, filling the joints with new mortar (that closely matches the color of the brick), and then applying a thin line of putty in a contrasting color down the center of the joint.

Step 3:

Paint Windows & Doors:

Nothing will spruce up your home or building like a fresh coat of paint! Choose a contrasting color to add a punch, or keep things classic with a bright white.  We chose a sleek black to coordinate with our logo and branding.

Step 4:

Install New Awnings:

Awnings are a great way to add personality to your storefront.  We have a combination of metal and fabric window awnings with a dramatic door awning that features our logo and building number.  Our customers never have trouble finding our entrance because our awning screams, “Come in!”

If you don’t have existing awnings, you should consider adding some.  With so many options for doors, windows, decks & patios and everything in between, there really is something for every home or business owner.

Head over to our photo gallery to window shop (pun totally intended) some awnings of your own.  Click here for residential and here for commercial.
