Winterizing and de-winterizing my home’s exterior is a chore I don’t exactly look forward to. Every change of season I get bogged down with leaf removal, taking in patio furniture, rearranging my indoor storage to fit said furniture, putting it back out again, pressure washing, staining, seeding, weeding, watering and all of the other various outdoor tasks that are involved in maintaining a home. It can feel like a full-time job.
So when I learned that my awnings require virtually no seasonal maintenance, I was surprised and relieved. Here’s a breakdown of the work you don’t have to do! A reverse to do list if you will:
- Retractable awnings can simply be retracted and left throughout the winter. There’s no extra risk of rust or wear and tear than in any other time of year.
- Window awnings can either be left in place or removed to allow more sunlight into your home during the gloomy winter months. It’s up to you. If you want to take them down you can do it yourself, or we offer removal and reinstallation at a nominal cost.
- If you’ve added fabric to your pergola, it can simply be left in place. If you’re in an area with heavy snowfall, you can remove the fabric to eliminate the risk of your canvas fabric becoming droopy after a couple of years.
And there you have it! Whether your awnings are stationary, retractable or attached to a structure, they can stay put year round. I wish all of my home’s fixtures were this low maintenance!
